Abstract: The flavonoid composition of five Hosta species and 85 Hosta cultivars was investigated by HPLC-DAD for the first time to expand the applications of Hosta. Qualitative and quantitative analysis methods for total flavonoids in flowers of Hosta were used as a basis for the quality control of Hosta. A combination of powerful tools (HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MSn), were used to characterize seventeen kinds of flavonoid including kaempferol 3,7-di-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucosyl-7-O-rutinose, isorhamnetin 3,4-di-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-quinoylglucoside, kaempferol 3-O-sinapoylglucoside, kaempferol 3-O- ascorbicoylglucoside, kaempferol 7-O-neohesperidoside, kaempferol 3,7-di-O-hexoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucosyl-7-O-rhamnoside, luteolin 7-O-neohesperidoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-glucuronide, kaempferol 3-O-robinobioside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucuronide, kaempferol 3-O-pentose, and kaempferol 7-O-glucoside. The flavonoid contents of 90 kinds of Hosta flowers were compared and the high-value species were selected.
