Effects of exogenous metallothionein on milkability and anti-oxidative status in dairy cattle

Abstract: The effects of exogenous metallothionein (Zn-MT) on milkability and anti-oxidative status of dairy cattle was studied using 24 lactating Chinese Holstein cows. They were randomly allocated to groups A, B, C, and D, and Zn-MT was supplemented at 0, 4.0, 8.0 and 12.0 mg/capita respectively by intravenous injection. The milk yields of the cows in groups C and D were higher (P<0.05) than those in group A, but there were no significant differences in milk yields between groups A and B or in milkfat percentages between groups. The blood GSH-Px activities of the cows in groups B, C, and D were also higher(P<0.05)than that in group A. The blood CAT activities of the cows in group D were higher than those in groups A (P<0.01) and B (P<0.05), and there were significant differences (P<0.05) in the blood CAT activities of group A and C cows. The T-AOC levels of the cows in groups C and D were also higher (P<0.05) than those in groups A and B. The MDA serum content of cows in groups B, C, and D were lower (P<0.05) than of cows in group A. Exogenous Zn-MT should be an effective anti-oxidative substance and physiological supplement for dairy cattle.
