Abstract: A field release of transgenic alfalfa and non-transgenic alfalfa grown under normal agricultural practice was monitored for changes in total bacterial, actinomycetic and fungal populations in 2009 and 2010. Classical plate counting and PCR technology were adopted to investigate the amounts of microorganisms and horizontal gene transfer. We found that three kinds of soil microorganism appeared with identical trends within different months and different years. ANOVA and multiple comparison analyses revealed that there was no significant difference in terms of the microorganism numbers between both individual plants and between the amounts of cultured soil microorganisms in the rhizosphere soil of the transgenic alfalfa and non-transgenic alfalfa. No alien target DNA was detected from PCR products of total soil DNA, and strains DNA amplified with specific primers of BADH. Our preliminary results indicated that there are still no significant effects of transgenic alfalfa on the soil microorganism system.
